New Zealand is known for its gorgeous landscape, great beaches, and a myriad of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and skiing.
If you’re a digital nomad, its not just a great place to work, but also an interesting country as you get to explore its mountains, the islands, and the Maori culture.
So what is the new digital nomad visa introduced by the country and how can you take advantage of it? We’ve covered everything in this post.

What is New Zealand's Digital Nomad Visa?
New Zealand has made it easier for digital nomads to work remotely while enjoying its stunning landscapes.
As of January 27, 2025, visitors can work remotely for overseas businesses or clients while on a visitor visa.
Although this is not an official digital nomad visa, it allows remote workers to live and work in New Zealand without additional paperwork.
Who Can Work Remotely in New Zealand?
If you are self-employed or work for an overseas company, you can do remote work while visiting New Zealand. Here are the categories of workforce that we envisage would benefit from this visa or can take advantage of it:
- Virtual Assistants
- Software engineers
- Writers
- Content creators
- Startup founders
Note: this only applies as long as your work or activities do not involve working with a New Zealand business.

Restrictions on Remote Work
While the new digital nomad visa looks great, it does not cover everything under the sun. You cannot work remotely in New Zealand if:
- You are working for a New Zealand employer.
- You are exchanging services for goods or accommodation within New Zealand.
- Your work requires you to be physically present at a location in New Zealand.
If you want to work for a New Zealand-based employer, you must apply for a different visa that allows employment.
How Long Can You Stay?
The updated visitor visa allows you to stay for:
- Up to six months for multiple-entry visas.
- Up to nine months for single-entry visas.
How to Apply for a New Zealand Visitor Visa
Citizens from visa-waiver countries, such as the USA, UK, EU nations, Japan, South Korea, Argentina, and Israel, can apply online for a visitor visa. The application process typically takes about three and a half weeks.
Requirements for the Visitor Visa
Like every visa application process, there are documents and requirements you need in order to apply.
To apply, you must submit the following;
- A valid passport
- A reason for visiting (such as tourism or visiting family)
- Proof of onward travel
- Proof of funds (at least NZD $1,000 per month of stay)
- A certificate of good health
- A chest X-ray (if staying more than six months)
- A criminal background check
- International health insurance
The visa fee is NZD $341, the equivalent of $198.23 in USD as at the time of writing. Of course, this is subject to change based on the exchange rate.
Paying Taxes as a Remote Worker in New Zealand
If you work remotely in New Zealand, you may have to pay taxes depending on how long you stay:
- If you stay less than 92 days in a 12-month period, you may not need to pay tax.
- If your country has a tax treaty with New Zealand, you can stay up to 183 days before being taxed.
- If you stay longer than the allowed period, you become a tax resident and must pay local taxes.
For tax questions, contact New Zealand Inland Revenue or a tax professional.
